14^th Annual Race for the Future Scheduled for Saturday, October 9, 2010

Put on your running shoes and prepare for the 14th Annual Race for the Future 5K run/walk and kid's dash to benefit the Lee’s Summit Educational Foundation and the Carrie Foresee Memorial Scholarship Fund.  This popular event attracts over 800 area runners and walkers and begins at the scenic campus of Lee's Summit West High School located at 2600 SW Ward Road.   

A friendly competition is held each year for students and staff in the Lee's Summit R-7 Schools.  The top two schools with the highest percentage of staff and students running or walking in the 5K win a $500 grant and a traveling trophy from the Lee's Summit Educational Foundation.  Last year's recipients were Hazel Grove Elementary School and Summit Lakes Middle School.  Third, fourth and fifth place schools each receive a $200 grant.  The schools running away with those honors last year were Highland Park Elementary, Pleasant Lea Middle School and Lee's Summit High School.   

De'feet' the Superintendent is an all-new competition this year.  Every person who crosses the 5K finish line before Superintendent Dr. David McGehee will have their name entered into a drawing for a $100 Hy-Vee gift card.  While only one lucky person will win free groceries, everyone who de'feets" the Superintendent will win bragging rights for the whole year!  Dr. McGehee's time last year was 29:51.
